first broken bone...

Warning: This post contains a few graphic details and is therefore not for the faint of heart. Papa, this means you might need to sit down w/a wet rag on your forehead to read this post. It's also probably a good idea to have Grammer standing by to pick you up should you get dizzy and light headed!

It was bound to happen and it finally did. We made our first official visit to the ER on Saturday night. After Liam's birthday party, Keller and I stopped off at Gap Kids to exchange a pair of jeans for Kase. While we were at the counter, Keller very loudly told me he needed to go poop. Once he realized I was going w/him, he changed his mind and said he didn't need to go. {He doesn't like an audience when he goes to the bathroom but I can't say that I blame him.} As I started searching through a stack of jeans looking for Kase's size, Keller very quietly snuck off to the bathroom. The next thing I hear is him screaming and crying hysterically. I look over and his thumb is caught in the door on the side where it's hinged to the door frame. Still not sure how it ended up on that side of the door but it did. As soon as I opened the door to free his finger, blood started gushing out everywhere. All over the floor, our clothes and the counter once I sat him up there. The poor little girl working couldn't find any towels so she had to call the manager who brought over a first aid kit and an accident report. Uh lady, that stupid report is going to have to wait b/c my son is bleeding and I don't have time for that, nor do I really care about it. You better just be glad I didn't grab a shirt off the rack and wrap it around his finger b/c the thought crossed my mind. So, off to the ER we go. Ohhhh wait a minute, we're in Plano and I have no idea where to go so I aimlessly drive like a maniac down George Bush and call Tony to tell him to search on-line for the nearest place. We arrive at Care Now and after listening to him for 2 minutes, they took us right back and went to work on his poor little thumb.

First up was the x-ray and Keller did amazingly well for that part. Actually, he was a trooper the entire time we were there; which made it so much easier on me. I think I was worse off than he was and my thumb was perfectly fine. They did have to wrap him up in a sheet and hold him on the bed to give him the nerve block but I left the room and hid around the corner for that. I knew he would be as angry as a bull and I didn't want him to think I had any part of that. I was back w/in a minute and you could tell w/in 3 that his thumb was numb. He said, "It's all better mommy. Now we can go home."

Oh precious little baby, he had no idea the fun was just beginning. They drilled a small hole in his nail, drained the blood out from behind

wrapped it up and put on this lovely new splint.

He wasn't sure about it at first but after realizing it would protect his boo-boo, he didn't mind it so much. We had an appt with the orthopedic surgeon at the Tom Landry center on Tuesday to determine if they need to surgically repair the fracture or if it will heal up nicely on it's own. As of now, the doctor thinks it's going to heal by itself and is more worried about the fingernail coming off too soon. How soon is "too soon" is a question I forgot to ask but we go back in two weeks for new x-rays and to re-assess the nail issue. Please say a little prayer that this heals w/out surgery b/c this mommy is not ready for round two. I realize it could be a lot worse and I am so grateful that it's not. However, seeing your little one in pain is no fun at all regardless of what it is.

Sorry sweet Keller Bug, I wish mommy could kiss it and make it all better. You are such a tough little boy so I know you'll bounce right back. Daddy and I have known since you were 6 months old that you'd be the child to land us in the ER. You just proved us right a lot sooner than we expected. Huge favor...can you please exercise a little more caution from now on? It'll be a lot easier on all of us...including Kase who now thinks he can't take a bath w/you or get close to you b/c you have a gross thumb.

Oh my goodness!! Poor baby! I'm so proud of you for handling all of that on your own :) It's never easy to see them in pain....hopefully this will be the last trip to the ER!
